The First Chocolate And Nut Candy Bar Invented (It Was A Canadian)

There are many wonderful candy companies that can be thanked today for some of our favorites. One company in particular has brought Canadians a love that they cherish, seemingly every week of their lives. It was the Ganong Candy company founded out of New Brunswick Canada that was setting the stage for the first nut chocolate infusion in history. This blend of two favorites was created more for necessity than simply pleasure of to wonderful ingredients. The first nut- chocolate bar was actually created in order to serve the creator on long trips.

Any Pal O His Is

Any Pal O Mine was the name of the first actual chocolate –nut candy bar created and it was done so in New Brunswick Canada. This candy bar was a 5 cent bar that was the first to be wrapped prior to selling. This bar was created in the year 1910 and it was introduced by Sir Arthur Ganong of the famed and proud Canadian Ganong candy company. The actual purpose of the bar was to ensure that the chocolate would not melt and fall apart in his pocket, when he was on long fishing trips. The introduction of the nuts was meant as a bonding ingredient and the recipe sort of took off.  When the notion to wrap the bar in cellophane was brought up many scoffed at the idea. No one was laughing when they realized that this actually extended the life of the bar.

American Influence

There was a great deal of influence from Ganong’s American counterparts to the south, yet he was the first to bring this delightful blend together. With giants such as Hersey and Nestle having their own fame in the candy world, Ganong Candy Company was silently making headlines. The invention of this first ever chocolate-nut bar, was something that was immediately popular. The American giants were enjoying the spoils of their own chocolate treats, yet they had no idea the first true mixed bar was coming. If it was not for the need to keep the chocolate in one piece, it is most likely that the idea never would have been born. Today there are more than fair shares of fine chocolate bars that have either nuts or other small products, yet it was this first invention that brought it all to light.

Paving The Way

With the introduction of the first candy bar to have nuts in it, came the clear path of creativity. More and more candy companies were willing to take a chance on what they had hoped to be the next big sellers. Toffee and forms of Nougat were added to chocolate after this initial nut bar discovery in hopes of reaching the same level of success.  When there is a breakthrough such as the nut-chocolate bar, most in the field take notice. It just so happens that for Arthur Ganong, he managed to do what others wanted yet failed to produce.
