Fair Trade Chocolate
Much like many forms of food, Cacao beans are picked or harvested. This includes the cacao beans that are used to create chocolate that is adored all over the world today. These beans must be picked and processed in order for the bean to be ready to go through the steps to become chocolate.
Unfortunately there are locations today that are using child labor or unwilling participants in order to obtain the beans that are required. The world has taken notice and is now reacting accordingly by refusing to have anything to do with harvesters that use such practices.
Certified Chocolate
It is odd to see a quote that chocolate would be certified yet, this is exactly what it is. One of the largest candy makers in the world today in Cadbury is taking the necessary steps to keep illegal and cruel practices from continuing while harvesting cacao beans. Cadbury is certifying that their chocolate is 100% fair trade chocolate.
This will not change the physical taste of a chocolate bar that you eat but, it will leave a wonderful thought in the back of your mind. This thought is that you did your part as well in the fight to keep slave practices away from the cacao fields. There are a great many companies today that are on the bandwagon and this is not solely reserved for the makers of chocolate. Companies that make tea are also joining in on the fight against this issue.
Giant Steps Forward
While it is true that not all farming conditions are involved with slave labor practices, there are several farms that are struggling to get by. Many of the companies that pay the farmers for their cacao beans, bananas, rice, and nuts pay a premium in the form of an overpayment to the farmer. This is above market value and is meant to help the farmer keep afloat. By paying these higher than market prices the companies are ensuring that the farmers and their communities are getting what they need to survive.
This practice is as much about proper business etiquette as it is life etiquette. As more and more companies sign up for this service to protect the farmers, the better the product is for everyone involved. There is even an outcry from the companies to the customers. They are imploring the consumers to show a sign of appreciation and make donations to these struggling farmers that bring us the products that we utilize on a daily basis.
It Gives Back To The Communities
One of the most important aspects of fair trade chocolate is that it gives back to the communities in which it is not only grown and harvested but, in the communities that it is consumed as well. This is one of those life situations where the more you do for others, the more it will turn out in your own favor. The better the harvesting of the cacao beans through dedicated slave free workers will mean the better the odds that the chocolate that you receive will be that much better in quality standards.
